The Family Reunion
It’s Enough to Strike Fear into the Heart of Even the Bravest Celiac
It will be fine they said. We’re having a pig roast. Just pork. No seasoning, no sauce, just plain, naturally gluten free meat.
And it looked amazing! A whole pig roasting away on the barbecue waiting for me and 75 or so of my closest relatives to dig in.
Lucky for me I always bring food for emergencies.
Also lucky for me I had an ally at the family barbecue.
My cousin and fellow celiac happened to be standing next to the roasting pig as a well meaning uncle poured beer all over it. “It will burn off” he said.
We don’t really expect people to get it do we?
And we all have our stories don’t we? Like the time I took my own burger to a family barbecue, just to be safe then doused it with Heinz Ketchup, or that’s what the bottle said. It was inches from my lips when my brother-in-law happened to mention the ketchup was homemade. The secret ingredient? Worcestershire. Not-gluten-free Worcestershire!
Ah the summer barbecue. Family, friends, food, drinks, sunshine, and warm weather. What could be more perfect? You can safely socialize this summer so long as you take a little extra care.
Here are a few things to watch for and tips to make the summer party season enjoyable and easy on the tummy.
