A Kiss is Just a Kiss - Or is It?
Let’s cut right to the chase shall we?
Is it safe to kiss someone who’s eaten gluten if you have celiac disease?
For this I turned to an expert. Dr. Jocelyn Sylvester wrote in the Celiac Canada newsletter that a 30g slice of gluten free cake would have more gluten than 5ml of saliva after the person has eaten something containing gluten. So it seems like the risk is small.
I think we can apply a little common sense though too:
Watch for actual crumbs - especially in the moustache or beard.
If it’s right after dinner they may have food particles in their mouth.
Beer could be an issue while the person is drinking it or right after.
In these cases I’d say wait a while or suggest a date with the toothbrush before any kissing.
What about make-up or lip balm?
In that same newsletter and on their website, Celiac Canada advises that these products are low risk for someone with celiac disease. You’d need to eat a fair bit of lip balm to get enough gluten to cause a problem. A kiss should not be an issue.
